WHAT’S YOUR ANNOYING
TUBE BEHAVIOUR?

... ILLUSTRATION
... PUBLICATION
... BRANDING

I created strategic project targeting London tube commuters, using a playful campaign made to inform the travellers of their annoying behaviours in a way that was ‘poking fun’ at the scenarios instead of lecturing them.
For this project I made an edition of an A6 zine concept; posters that could be used on the tube digital poster system; and stickers that could be stuck inside the tube carriages to blend in with regular signage in a humorous and rebellious way.

CHARACTER DESIGN process

I knew I’d need illustrated people to visually communicate the stories being submitted to me by the tube users, therefore iterated multiple versions of characters with different features and proportions to decide a final look. The final character appearance is the one second from the left.

initial Billboard concept

I sketched a storyboard for the annoying behaviour of playing music out loud, showing individual frames and how it would work. Using the character style I had developed, I created an animation which was cartoon like in its sketchy appearance.

I used Procreate to illustrate the frames and free online archives to add the sound editions.
I liked the visual language of these videos, but it didn’t have the humorous impact I was after.

Finals

Comical Zine

The zine itself was constructed from stories that had been submitted by the public about things they find annoying to experience on the tube. These stories were translated into cartoons which had a very hand drawn aesthetic, with typographic font choices that mimic the fonts currently used within the TFL’s branding system.

signage stickers

I created a set of stickers that were made to be placed up on the tube walls to blend in with the regular signage system. These reflected some of the behaviours that the public said they wished would stop.

OUTCOMES IN CONTEXT

I placed my stickers and zine in situ in the tube carriages to see people’s interactions with what I made. Overall each person who saw it at least smiled or even chuckled to themselves which showed I had successfully completed my aim.

I also imagine these designs converted to electric billboard posters which I have mocked up, as well as a humorous and playful Instagram page.
