‘SATIRE VS CURRENT AFFAIRS’

At the time of this project the news was saturated with frustration and annoyance at what was going on in the world, so I wanted to translate the stories into something that could be digested easier.

This caused me to develop a cartoon series which satirised news stories into cartoons that had humour which expressed a tone of comedy which felt very ‘British’. This included creating a new and quirky illustration style for depicting the subjects of each story, as well as narratives that were recognisable, but the exaggeration was still somewhat accurate.


 


CHARACTER STYLISATION
I knew I’d need a character design which played into the satirical tone, but would still be able to be recognisable for the news communication to be effective. I ended up choosing the style on the bottom left, using my sister as a reference person whilst designing. 




CARTOON DESIGNS
The current affairs at the time of the project were very frustrating through news of protesting, politics and Covid-19.  So I chose to depict these in a way which could eleviate stress and anxiety revolving around the topics, and allow people to laugh.



NEWSPAPER COVER MOCKUPS
These cartoon design examples were created to be eye-catching newspaper cover images, over current existing covers which often encourage a pessimistic view of what’s going on in the world currently.
