I have always had an excitement around labels and creating them, therefore when I saw ‘Designer Briefs’ on Instagram release a brief for a botanical soda brand named ‘Petali’, I thought I’d give it a go. The design project had a deadline of a less than a week, so it was a quick short project, and required faster working pace. I used inspiration from the bright colours and shaped found in the natural world with and emphasis on abstract illustration in the labels.

This brief continued to test my layout skills when it comes to packaging for food and drinks products, as well as adapting my love of illustration to an outcome that reflected the brief’s aims appropriatetly.

INITIAL BRAINSTORMING STAGES
In the first stages I began by analysing the short brief given by the site, breaking down key words and phrases that would contribute to the design. I then began researching visual references, such as breaking down what already exists, as well as what inspires my thinking. I also built the flavours I would use for my example ‘Petali’ drinks, basing the botanical flavouring off of: a flower, a fruit, and a herb in each flavour blend.

DEFINING A LOGO
I selected a collection of fonts which I felt had shapes or serifs which could be customised for a logo for ‘Petali’. I wanted something pretty modern to stand out from the rest of the market in the premium drinks category, which have fonts which look fairly traditional. I created floral shapes in the letters whch had spaces to connect to the brand.

ILLUSTRATION AND LABEL DESIGN
For the illustrative element I wanted to involve, I did some research into sketchy abstract drawing styles and created a moodboard.  Using these as inspiration I started lightly drawing some elegant loose illustrations of the drink ingredients onto each label design with a pencil brush. This could be refined later with a more bold pen brush.

FINAL STAGES
I refined the illustrations initially using procreate studio brushes, then image traced and cleaned up areas with the pen tool on illustrator. I used two toned colour palettes which reflected the shades of the ingredients in each soda, using minimal colour to portray that feel of a more premium product.
