A competition held by the brand Ketnipz, facilitated by Oditi, asked designer to create a new character costume concept and design for their iconic ‘Bean’, coming up with an idea which fits in with their cutesie company persona. I had a week to determine and finalise my submission.
I illustrated a character which I named ‘Runner Bean’, linking the vegetable, sport, and original character name in a witty and humorous amalgomation of the three conmotations. This idea played into the sweet nature of the brand image through the kawaii stylisation of the costume, with an acute awareness of what was going on at the time, with the Paris Olympics a couple months away, incorporating that sporty element.

The final design involved Bean dressed as a ‘runner bean’ vegetable, with a pair of little running shoes, as well as an 80s style sweat band. The design is completed with a first place medal for our winning athlete ‘Runner Bean’. The design didn’t win the competition, but I am still proud of the concept and execution.
