Every year Fedrigoni reaches out to upcoming studios and designers they have selected around the UK to create a designs for their annual calendar publication ‘Fedrigoni 365’. Each designer is given a date and ‘seed word’ to base they’re idea around, which ultimately comes under a whole publication theme, which for this year was ‘opposites’.
In 2024, scouted from my Central Saint Martins Graduation Showcase, I was selected to develop a design for the 8th October under the seed word ‘true’ for the 2025 publication. I had a week to design my edition.
IDeation Process
To come up with a concept, I had a big brainstorming session writing down everything that came to my mind around my date and ‘seed word’. These varied from sayings, to phrases, to international holidays. Through research and personal associations I came up with a plethora of ideas to develop.
ILLUSTRATION PROCESS
As my date was in the week lead up to ‘World Mental Health Day’, I based my idea around the support, comfort and catharsis you can feel after sharing your true thoughts and emotions. The design was illustrated in black and white so it could be converted into the monotone silver colour scheme chosen by Fedrigoni. I designed my ‘8’ to be comforted by human characters, with the phrases ‘I need help’ and ‘I love you’ drawn inside. I inverted the black and white, and tested the design by using the PANTONE swatch colour, to ensure it would be effective on the white ‘Light’ book I was assigned.
Finals
The two opposing books sat side by side in their holding case, each with 365 days of designs inside. The final publication included an embossed 365 emblem which crossed over the side of both books when side by side.My 8th October design featured in the light book, consolidating my decision to invert the colours so I’d have a dark contrasting background base.
